Cyber-physical Forgetting in sozio-digitalen Systemen

2016 - 2019: Intentional Forgetting, Routines & Retrieval Cues

What is this project about?

The focus of our research project is the intentional forgetting of highly proceduralized, "automatic" routine activities that are performed in the working context of teams in organizations. Here, the basic assumption is made that behavior is activated by retrieval cues. Intentional forgetting is manipulated experimentally by varying and weakening clues related to recall a knowledge intensive multi-actor routine.

What are the results of the project so far?

What are the objectives of the project?

The aim of the research is to show how routines can be intentionally forgotten by individuals, teams and organizations. On the other hand, the significance of cues is examined. It is assumed that cues of different categories differ in their impact. Another aim is therefore the identification of particularly effective cues, whose manipulation promotes willful forgetting in a special way.

How can organizations use the results?

In change processes it is often assumed that it is enough to know what the objective of the change is. However, especially in the context of routine actions, employees tend to prioritize the old routine. Change is not only a problem of a new routine, but also a problem of the old routines. Only when old routines are no longer used, changes will be successful. Particularly affected are multiactor production routines. The expected results obtained in each working context under investigation can help to consciously change the behavior of individuals, groups and organizations.
